# STD/STI testing at your GP in Leiden: how it works

Updated4 Jun 2026

Need an STD test in Leiden? Learn how STI testing at your GP works, when to test, what it costs and what Dutch insurance covers. Discreet, reliable and English-speaking.

**Short answer.**You can get an STD/STI test directly at your GP in Leiden. You briefly discuss your symptoms or risk, the doctor or assistant takes a blood sample and/or gives you material for a swab or urine test, and you discuss the result afterwards. At HeyDoc that happens via chat. STI testing at the GP is covered by Dutch basic insurance (your annual deductible does apply).

A note on terminology: in Dutch, sexually transmitted infections are called*soa*(seksueel overdraagbare aandoeningen). If you search for "soa test Leiden", that is the same thing as STD/STI testing.

## When should you get an STD test?

Consider testing if one or more of these apply:

- You had unprotected sex (without a condom) with a new or changing partner
- A current or former partner has an STI
- You have symptoms: burning when urinating, discharge, itching, blisters or sores, unexplained lower abdominal pain
- You are starting a new relationship and want reassurance together
- You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
- You are worried for any other reason after sexual contact

Many STIs cause**no symptoms**at first. No symptoms does not mean no infection. When in doubt, test.

## How does STI testing at the GP work?

1. **Short intake.**You explain (confidentially) your symptoms, type of contact and possible exposure. This determines which infections we test for.
2. **Sample.**Depending on the infection: a blood draw (HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B), a urine test, or a swab (chlamydia, gonorrhoea). Some samples you can collect yourself.
3. **Lab.**The material goes to the laboratory.
4. **Result.**At HeyDoc we discuss the result via chat, usually within a few days. If treatment is needed, we arrange it right away.

## Which STIs are tested?

The most commonly tested infections are:

- **Chlamydia**: most common, often without symptoms
- **Gonorrhoea**
- **HIV**
- **Syphilis**
- **Hepatitis B**(and hepatitis C when indicated)

Which tests you need depends on your situation. Not everyone needs to be tested for everything.

## What does an STD test cost, and is it covered?

An STD test through your GP is part of**basic Dutch health insurance**(basisverzekering). That means it is covered, but the lab costs count towards your annual**deductible**(eigen risico, at least €385 in 2026 if you haven't used it yet). The GP consultation itself does not count towards the deductible; the laboratory costs usually do.

Want to test**anonymously and free of charge**without going through your insurance? In certain situations (for example under 25, with symptoms, or notified by a partner) you can go to the**Centre for Sexual Health of the GGD Hollands Midden**. Your GP is low-threshold and discreet; the GGD is a good route if anonymity or cost is a barrier.

## Privacy and discretion

Everything you discuss with your GP is covered by medical confidentiality. An STD test and its result are recorded in your medical file, which is only accessible to your own care providers. There is no reason for embarrassment; for a GP this is everyday, neutral care.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I get an STD test at a GP in Leiden?**Yes. At HeyDoc on Lammenschansweg you can get tested, and we discuss the result via chat, fully in English.

**How quickly do I get the result?**Usually within a few days, depending on the test.

**Do I need symptoms to get tested?**No. You can be tested without symptoms, for example after unprotected contact or when starting a new relationship.

**Is testing anonymous?**At the GP it goes through your file and insurance. For fully anonymous or free tests you can, in certain cases, go to the GGD.

**What if the test is positive?**Most STIs are very treatable. We discuss the result, start treatment if needed, and advise on informing partners.
