# Student doctor in Leiden: no phone queue, no bill per message

Updated 30 Sept 2026

Registration: open for new patients · checked on 30 September 2026

**QUICK ANSWER**

HeyDoc is a regular GP practice at Lammenschansweg 15B that **registers students from all of Leiden for free**: with Dutch basic insurance, with Aon Student Insurance, or before you have a BSN. You send a message instead of calling at 8 am, the doctor answers the same working day, and an appointment at the practice is usually the same day. The university buildings on Rapenburg and Steenschuur are 4 to 6 minutes by bike.

- Registration costs € 0. Being registered means every consultation and every chat message is covered by your insurance, with no separate bills.
- Aon Student Insurance: we bill Aon directly. You do nothing and never see an invoice.
- No BSN or insurance yet? You are first seen as a passing-by patient and converted to a regular registration later.
- Kamerlingh Onnes Building 4 min by bike, Plexus and Academy Building 5, Lipsius 6, Leidse Schans 6, LUMC 12.
- Chat message with a photo: answered the same working day by the doctor. In-person appointment usually the same day, always within 1 to 2 working days.
- Mental health is welcome: first with the doctor, then a mental health nurse (POH-GGZ) or a psychologist from our network if needed.

## Registered, or paying per consultation?

There are two ways to see a GP in the Netherlands. You are registered: your insurer pays the practice a fixed amount per quarter, and consultations, messages and repeat prescriptions cost you nothing extra. Or you come as a passing-by patient: every practice then charges the NZa passing-by tariff per consultation, in 2026 € 33.80 for a consultation of 5 to 20 minutes and € 67.60 for a longer one, plus € 3.44 if you are not covered by the Dutch Health Insurance Act.

Some student services only work with that second model. Handy if you are not registered anywhere, but every short message then becomes an invoice you or your insurer has to handle. At HeyDoc you can simply be registered. It costs nothing, you build a file with a doctor who knows you, and you have a fixed GP for referrals, repeat prescriptions and the out-of-hours service.

| Registered at HeyDoc | Passing-by or pay per consultation
--- | --- | ---
Cost per consultation | € 0 | € 33.80 to € 67.60 (NZa 2026)
Cost per chat message | € 0 | Usually a consultation fee
Deductible (eigen risico) | Does not apply to GP care | Does not apply to GP care
Medical file | One file with your own doctor | Separate contacts
Repeat prescriptions and referrals | Included | Per item
Without a BSN | Passing-by first, then converted | Passing-by only

## Why students register with us

Waiting on hold at 8 in the morning, telling your story to the assistant first and then again in the consulting room, and missing a lecture for it: that is still how it goes at many practices. Yet student questions are often straightforward, and a photo is sometimes enough.

Here you send a message, with a photo or a request, and the doctor reads it personally. If a consultation is needed, we set it up straight away. You tell your story once. There is ample capacity to answer the same working day; if something slips through once, that is a human error, not a system that keeps you waiting.

## Insurance: Aon, Dutch basic insurance or EHIC

You do not need to work out the Dutch healthcare system first. This is how it works with us:

- Aon Student Insurance: HeyDoc is a contracted provider. We bill Aon ourselves; you do nothing and never see anything of it.
- Dutch basic insurance (basisverzekering): GP care is fully covered and does not count towards your deductible.
- EHIC (European Health Insurance Card): you pay the consultation up front via a payment link (iDEAL, Dutch bank or credit card, including Amex) and claim it back from your insurer at home. Send us a copy of your EHIC.
- Other international insurance: you can still be registered with us. Get in touch and we agree on how we invoice.

## No BSN yet? Then we simply start

A BSN sometimes takes weeks. Meanwhile you need repeat medication you did not bring from home, or you have a bladder infection just before a trip and would rather not carry it around for a week, even though it is not an emergency. You do not have to wait: you come as a passing-by patient, we help you the same day, and as soon as your BSN and insurance are sorted we convert you to a regular registration. Your file stays.

We see this often with students who have just arrived: arranging repeat medication, a small wound that needs stitches, allergy symptoms that only start after the move, and the stress that comes with moving to a new country. All of it is ordinary GP care.

## Mental health

Life is heavy these days and you are allowed to say so. You send a message or book a conversation, first with the doctor. If more is needed, we look together at the mental health nurse (POH-GGZ) in the practice or a psychologist from our network. You do not have to prove anything and it is covered by your insurance.

We work with the Zuiderapotheek around the corner, but a prescription can go to any pharmacy in the Netherlands: eFarma (home delivery), Centraal Apotheek Leiden, Apotheek Luifelbaan, Apotheek Hulp der Menschheid, or the pharmacy near your room. You name it, we send the prescription.

## Who is your doctor?

Amir Mirrezai, GP (BIG 19917603001). Trained at VUmc in Amsterdam, registered as a GP in both the Netherlands (BIG) and Sweden (Socialstyrelsen), and formerly a trainer in the GP residency programme at LUMC. You get the same doctor at every contact; there is no rotating pool.

## Frequently asked

Does registering with a student doctor cost money?

Not at HeyDoc. Registration costs € 0 and GP care is covered by your basic insurance or Aon policy, without a deductible. Only people who are not insured anywhere pay the NZa passing-by tariff per consultation.

I have Aon Student Insurance. Do I have to claim myself?

No. HeyDoc is contracted with Aon and bills them directly. You do not send anything in and you do not receive an invoice.

Can I register without a BSN?

You can be helped right away as a passing-by patient, including for repeat medication. We complete the registration as soon as your BSN and insurance are sorted; your file simply carries over.

How quickly do I get an answer?

Chat messages are answered the same working day by the doctor. An appointment at the practice is usually the same day and always within 1 to 2 working days.

Do I have to live close to the practice?

You can register from anywhere in Leiden and Leiderdorp, so also from the Merenwijk, Stevenshof or the city centre. From the university buildings in the old town it is 4 to 6 minutes by bike.

What if something happens in the evening or at the weekend?

For urgent care outside office hours, call the Leiden out-of-hours GP service, Huisartsenpost De Limes, on 088 427 47 00. That is the service for Leiden and the surrounding area. In a life-threatening emergency call 112.

Can I stay with HeyDoc after graduating?

Yes, as long as you keep living in Leiden or Leiderdorp and have Dutch health insurance or other valid cover.
